In the middle of the tiktok ban in the US, the US was about to take effect, Instagram quickly launched two new features for Reels, a short video platform that competed directly with Tiktok.
The addition of this new feature is considered a strategic move of Instagram to attract Tiktok users in the US, who are looking for an alternative platform. Two new features focus on enhancing social interaction, an important factor that helps retain users.
Instagram launched a new feature for Reels before the tiktok ban in the US
Specifically, REELS users in the US (and will soon be expanded to other areas) now:
- Easy to see your favorite content: Instagram will display the content that your friends and followers have liked or add notes on Reels right in the upper right corner of the Reels tab. This helps users to discover the content being concerned in their friends community.
- Directly interact with friends’ activities: The new response bar feature allows users to respond directly to friends’ activities on Reels, such as answering a likes. This creates more opportunities for interacting and expanding the scope of content approach.

The Instagram launches these new features just before the Tiktok ban takes effect clearly shows Meta’s ambition to dominate the short video market. Most likely Instagram will continue to add features to Reels in the near future to attract new users and consolidate its position.
